Destiny

It was nearly 10 pm when Zikri finally finished up the assignment which he had to submit during the morning lecture the next day. He took a deep breath of satisfaction and took a glance at his roommate’s whom was lying on the bed reading comic while listening to the walkman.

“Mate! Wanna go out for a drink?” He turned around and looked straight at his room-mate.

“What? Did you say anything?” asked his roommate, while unplugging the earphone from his ears and looking back at him.

“Yes! I’m asking if you wanna go out for a drink! I’ve finished my assignment and could use a cup of coffee or something…” He answered while walking towards the cupboard near the door, and took out a jacket from the cupboard.

His roommate just gave him a grin. “I guess, I can’t… eheheheh, may be next time ehheheh”.

“Hmm… OK… I understand. Looks like marka is more important than a roommate huh?” Zikri replied, opened the door and walked out without looking at his roommate.

Ever since his roommate met a girl from the Faculty of Veterinary Science, a few weeks ago, they never went out together anymore. In fact, they had not been to the cinema as usual when there was a new movie showing. His roommate spent most of the time with the girl and sometimes, came back very late at night when he had already been asleep.

Zikri walked down the stairs to the ground level of his block. The surrounding was so quiet that night. Most of the students resided at the hostel still had night lectures since they were all from the same matriculation stream. He was in TESL matriculation and there were no lectures at night.

As he approached the lounge of his block, there was a girl passed by on the corridor walking towards the hostel main office building. The girl was also looking at him in a glance and he could see her smiling at him, as she strolled away. He recognized the girl as she was from the same course but in a different group.

At the entrance of the block, Zikri looked around for anybody he would ask for a company, but it seemed that nobody was around. He stood still for a while, took out a cigarette from a pack of Dunhill he was holding all the while and slowly lit it up. Then, he slowly walked towards the motorcycle garage, next to the hostel main building.

Just as he was passing the entrance of hostel main office building, suddenly he heard someone called his name.

“Zikri!”

He stopped in a halt and turned towards where the voice came from. It was the girl who was from the same course but in the different group. He looked blankly at her.

“Err… did you call me just now?” He asked the girl. He could see her smiling at him and walked hurriedly towards him.

“Yup! You are Zikri right?” She said as she approached him at the entrance of the hostel main office building.

“Err.. why… yes, I am. And… How do you know my name?” Zikri answered, while feeling a little curious of how this girl got to know his name as he had never really talked to her before.

“Hahahahaha... Don’t be silly. Everyone in our course knows your name. There are only eight of you boys in this course” She had a laugh and answered his question.

“By the way, do you have some coins? I need to call my father but I don’t have enough here..” She continued, while still smiling at him.

He noticed that the girl was quite cute and her smile was kind of sweet, and out of sudden he felt his heart pounded very fast and his mind went blank for a while.

“Errr… errrr…”

“Errr.. what??? You can’t answer my question, or you don’t have any coins?” Again, the girl started to laugh at him as she slightly lifted her face up in front of him, looking straight into his eyes.
